The Boundaries of this district are West Godavari district in the East, Bay of Bengal in the South, Guntur and Nalgonda districts in the West and Khammam district in the North directions.

In the olden days this place was under the rule of Sathavahanas, Cholas, Reddy kings, Golkonda Nawabs and many other kings. Krishna District was formerly called Machilipatnam district. It was renamed as Krishna district, after the mighty river Krishna in 1859. The Telugu spoken over here has the flavor of the coastal area region. The Majority of the people in Urban areas of Krishna district are engaged in trade and commerce. Agriculture is the most important occupation of the people of the district.
The forest area occupies only 9% of the total district area. Social Forestry drive is undergoing in many parts of the district. Small deposits of Diamonds are also available. Natural Gas and Crude Oil is also found on the coastal belts of the district. The Barrage built on the river Krishna by Sir Arthur Cotton at Vijayawada is the Chief Irrigation Source to the District. Three tributaries of the River Krishna are the Bhima, the Tungabhadra and the Musi during its course in Andhra Pradesh. The climate of Vijayawada, the major city in Krishna district is tropical in nature with hot summers and moderate winters. April to June are the summer months with temperatures ranging from a minimum of 270 C to 450 C. The temperatures during the winter months range from 280 to 170 C. The area is very humid, the average humidity ranges from 68% during summer season.
The District hosts Many industries and KCP Sugar Factory at Vuyyur is a famous one, apart from this many Medium Scale Cement factories are there throughout the district. There are many Small Scale Industries like Musical Instruments at Jaggayyapeta, Roldgold Ornaments at Machilipatnam and Kondapalli toys. SIRIS Pharmaceutical Company at Vijayawada is another giant company manufacturing Allopathic medicines. Vijayawada Thermal Power Station near Ibrahimpatnam is ranked as the No.1 Power generation unit in India for its high performance. The annual rainfall in the region is about 965 mm and is contributed by the Southwest monsoon. The oldest port in Andhra Pradesh is Machilipatnam port. The Bus complex at Vijayawada is one of the Biggest in
Asia. The Railway station at Vijayawada is said to be the Biggest Junction in South India. Kuchipudi dance form originated from this district. Accessibility: Machilipatnam is well connected by road and rail. Nearest airport is at Vijayawada.

Located at a distance of 4 km. from Vijayawada, the Bhavani Island is situated upstream of River Krishna close to Prakasam Barrage. It is a good picnic spot for nature lovers. Boat riding facility is available

Gandhi Hill: The first Gandhi Memorial with 7 Stupas in the country was constructed on this hill at a height of 500 ft. The 52 ft. Stupa was unveiled on 6th October, 1968 by Dr. Zakir Hussain, the then President of India. Gandhi Memorial Library, the Sound and Light Show on Mahatma Gandhi's life and a planetarium are the other attractions
KanakaDurgaTemple: This temple was constructed for Goddess Durga by Arjuna.
This famous temple is on a hill connected by steps and a ghat road. Inscriptions of different dynasties are found in the temple.The festival of Dussera for Goddess Durga is celebrated here colourfully every year. A large number of pilgrims attend the celebrations and take a holy dip in the river Krishna.
ManginapudiBeach: Located at a distance of 11 km. from Machilipatnam, Manginapudi Beach is well known for its scenic beauty and also as a historic port city. During its heydays this port served as a gateway to India. The beach has tremendous potential with a natural bay and comparatively shallow and safe waters. The unique feature of this beach is that instead of sand it contains black soil
Prakasam Barrage: Completed in 1957, the Prakasam Barrage is an impressive 1223.5m long, modern regulator and road bridge that stretches across the river Krishna. Its panoramic lake and the three canals that run through the city give Vijayawada a Venetian appearance.
  The idea of constructing a barrage across Krishna dates back to 1798. But it took shape in the hands of Captain Buckle and was revised in 1839 and 1841 by Captain Best and Captain Lake. After the endorsement of Major Cotton, the board of Directors of East
  India Company approved it on 5th January 1850. The barrage was started in 1852 and completed in 1855. Later the State Government constructed a new regulator cum-round bridge, which was named after Sri Tanguturi Prakasam, the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. It provides a panoramic site of the river Krishna flowing besides the city, which travels around 720-km in Andhra Pradesh.
  An evening walk here is sure to reinvigorate the stress filled minds of the locals. The cool breeze coming from the sacred waters of Krishna refreshes both tourists and evening strollers drifting their minds to serenity.
